Lisa Rachel Hupf
I am a painter and collage artist. My paintings are emotional interpretations of specific places in Western New York, the Finger Lakes, and the Adirondacks. I’m drawn to the edges where the built and the wild shift into each other, creating transitions and patterns of color and line. Working primarily in oil stick, as well as oil and acrylic, I flatten the landscape into shape, color, and pattern through direct, intuitive mark-making, pushing color away from the literal.
In my collage work, that same instinct becomes physical. Using papers I paint and print myself alongside found and commercial materials, I break images down and reassemble them into abstract compositions. The two bodies of work share an interest in color, pattern, and memory. Each begins with something whole and rebuilds it through fragmentation and layering.
Both practices rely as much on memory as on observation. I’m working from what a place leaves behind in my mind, seeking its patterns more than a literal likeness. I hope viewers move through this work the way I move through a familiar place, finding something different each time.
